Corporate Environmental Policy
Monadnock Paper Mills, Inc. (“MPM”) is committed to responsible stewardship of the environment. In our daily operations, we strive to minimize our environmental impact while maintaining an elevated level of operational excellence.
Our commitment to the environment is expressed by our future planning and goal setting, data monitoring, and employee training on various environmental topics and strategies to minimize our impact and improve environmental performance.
We comply with all environmental laws, regulations, and permitting applicable to our operational regions, as well as uphold and abide by statutory guidelines. Our Environmental Policy aligns with our commitment to ISO 14001: Environmental Management System and applies to all MPM employees, facilities, and properties.
General
To meet our environmental objectives, MPM:
- Encourages legislators and state officials to develop sound, scientifically based environmental policies and regulations.
- Promotes environmental awareness among our customers, suppliers, converters, employees, and local community.
- Provides environmentally sustainable products and services to our customers.
- Continues to invest in research to determine innovative ways to reduce waste and efficiently use natural resources.
- Maintains our record of compliance with environmental regulations and standards.
Energy & Greenhouse Gas Emissions
MPM is committed to meeting or exceeding industry standards in energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the following actions:
- Conducting an annual Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions inventory
- Conducting frequent internal audits of our operational equipment to maximize energy efficiency.
- Identifying and implementing opportunities to reduce energy and gas consumption where feasible.
- Purchasing Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and Verified Emissions Reductions (VERs) to offset a portion of our emissions.
- Minimizing GHG emissions related to business travel and office operations by providing virtual alternatives when feasible.
Air Pollution
MPM is committed to pollution prevention and routinely monitoring, controlling, and treating air emissions of volatile organic chemicals, aerosols, corrosives, particulates, ozone-depleting substances, and combustion byproducts generated from operations. We intend to continue to identify the sources of the pollutants that are emitted from our facility and prioritize current technology that minimizes the amount of air pollutants produced.
Water
MPM is committed to meeting or exceeding industry standards in water consumption and water quality discharge through the following actions:

Conducting annual water consumption audits to identify processes where water consumption is highest.

Prioritizing WaterSense products to reduce water consumption when machinery, equipment, and tools need replacing,

Phasing in the use of white water or recycled water into processes when safe and feasible, such as production and cooling systems.

Analyzing and implementing, where feasible, operational changes to reduce water consumption.
Materials & Waste
MPM is committed to decreasing our overall waste generation through the following actions:
- Mapping our waste streams to determine areas of impact.
- Optimizing our processes to reduce the number of materials that enter the waste stream.
- Identifying and implementing opportunities to reduce our waste generation.
- Reviewing our processes to determine unnecessary material consumption and using the information to reduce waste of materials through process optimization.
- Choosing materials with minimal environmental impacts during the design and development of new products.
- Reusing packaging solutions wherever possible
Hazardous Materials
MPM is committed to maintaining an environment where hazardous materials are used safely and in a manner that minimizes their environmental impacts. Hazardous materials are defined as materials that are ignitable, corrosive, reactive, and/or toxic. Our Hazard Communication Program identifies the hazardous in materials used throughout our processes. Each year, MPM strives for zero incidents of hazardous material mistreatment. We intend to meet our commitment through the following actions:

Reviewing our processes to determine where less hazardous materials can be phased in and prioritizing materials that are recovered, bio-based, and/or eco-friendly.

Utilizing the Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP) when incidents that impact the environment and/or stakeholder health occur.

Utilizing the appropriate actions for labeling, storing, handling, and transporting hazardous materials as the EPA directs.
Biodiversity
MPM is committed to decreasing our overall waste generation through the following actions:
- Preventing pollution from our operations from entering waterways and harming marine habitats and species.
- Researching and implementing, where feasible, initiatives to enhance biodiversity in our area of operations.
- Encouraging employees to volunteer with organizations that protect and enhance biodiversity in the local community.
Employee Training
At MPM, our employees are at the heart of what we do, and we want them to have all the tools necessary to thrive at our company. All employees will be trained on this policy annually and any updates will be communicated to our employees.
The communication of our Environmental Policy will increase awareness of environmental stewardship within our company and throughout our supply chain. MPM’s Manager of Environmental Services is responsible for policy implementation, including tracking progress towards our quantitative targets and overseeing the adherence to our qualitative objectives. This policy will be reviewed annually and edited as deemed necessary by the Manager of Environmental Services.
